Set a clear mission
The best way to go about thrifting is to start out by knowing what you want. This way instead of spending an hour looking through a section of things you neither need nor want, you can tailor your search and make sure you are looking in the right places. If you don’t have an idea of the things you are looking for, you could spend the whole day looking and come out of the store with nothing.
No need to pull out every piece hanging on the rack, instead walk slowly and scan the aisles for the color, look or fabric you want.
Be selective, don’t just choose something because it looks “less bad” than the rest of the clothes it’s grouped with. Take the time to truly judge the piece and decipher whether you truly like it and would actually wear it, or if it’s just an easy option.
Touch the item you’re looking at. This is the best way to judge if it is a true steal and a worthy purchase. In a thrift store, this is your best bet to find good quality pieces.
Make the rounds to different sections. Many times a piece will be misidentified and placed in the wrong section. A treasure could be buried under men’s pieces or placed in the totally wrong section of the store.
Know that a good thrifting session takes time. You probably won’t find a good piece right away.
Know your thrift store
Be familiar with how the clothes are organized, tagged and priced. Some thrift stores will have different tags for different meanings like date, price and quality. And keep an eye out for any sales the store might have. If it’s not when you’re shopping, come back for it and see if the products you liked are now cheaper!
Make sure you give each piece you want to buy a through look over. You don’t want to buy a piece and then get home to find it has a stain or a hole.
Look at the checkout lines, the shortest line might not be the fastest.
Stay positive and let thrifting work for you
Don’t despair if you aren’t successful on your first trip. Thrifting takes time! You may not always come out on top everytime, but remember thrift shops are always getting new products so try again next time!
Thrifting is a great way to find some amazing pieces for a low cost. It just takes a bit of patience, a bit of scouring and dedication. But once you go thrifting you won’t go back!
